Manuel Gayoso de Lemos papers, 1792-1799.

Letters of Manuel Gayoso de Lemos to Major Stephen Minor concern general administrative issues and personal matters in the closing years of Spanish rule of the Natchez District. Letters discuss the survey of the Ellicott Line between Spanish Louisiana and American Mississippi Territory, which was drawn by Andrew Ellicott, surveyor for the United States government; the strained relations between Americans and Spaniards in Natchez; and prominent persons in the district including Andrew Ellicott, Don Jose (Joseph) Vidal, Captain Pope, Colonel Howard, and Captain [Isaac?] Guion, who was sent to Louisiana to assist with the transfer of the territory to the United States. Personal issues discussed include activities and health of members of the Gayoso de Lemos and Minor families and Gayoso de Lemos' interest in horses. Letters (1797-1799) of Gayoso de Lemos to Commandant Luis Deblanc on the German coast of Louisiana concern Benato Trahan and his bequest of one-fifth of his estate to a free Negro woman named Venus and the bodily injury of Luis Blouden at the hands of Maler Bacunos. A letter to Colonel Daniel Clark (1793) extends Gayoso de Lemos' offer of legal assistance to the Clark family. The collection contains a fourteen-page document in Spanish by Manuel Gayoso de Lemos entitled, "Instructions for my commission to the Chocta Nation" (March 1792), and a proclamation by Gayoso de Lemos calling for the reestablishment of peace at Natchez (June 1797).
